"Sarah Sherman"

HOW MIGHT WE

Create a set of animated illustrations and popups that add some Shermanistical flair to her Newsmakers interview.

background

The video team at Newsweek approached me to create some animated illustrations to add some of the flair to Sarah's interview. Much of the interview goes into her recent HBO special, which is absolutely full of amazing stop motion animation, props, and set decor. I went into this project wanting to make these illustrations a clear homage to her team's amazing work.

For the video, I created several unique illustrations for each of her answers during the quick-hit gross question segment towards the end of the interview.

All of the illustrations were created in Blender. The Clay material was made with the help of the ClayDoh plugin. Everything was done in 12 frames per second to match the stop motion work in the original material. The Curtain from the intro and eyeball segment was created using a fabric simulation.

The symbols used as a language censor were made using faux fabric (to match her outfit in the special), green simulated hair (matching the hair fork illustration), and bubble gum (sort of like an intestine??).
